AH-64D Apache LM1016
This fuselage is sure to cater to modelers intrigued with attack helicopters and is offered
for gasoline mechanics. The Apache is another awesome fuselage in Len Mount's collection.
The shear amount of detailing that is on the surface of the fuselage is just impressive.
The missiles, missile mounts and mast mounted radar dome are not included and were scratch built by Len Mount. |

There are few manufacturers who take on this fuselage. From a modeling stand point it
is more complicated with engine nacelles but Len has once again constructed a fuselage that builds easily and can be detailed
to extreme given time and patience. The D model commonly referred to as the "LongBow" was combat tested in 1995
to replace the older A model and has been seen mostly, deployed to combat theaters in the Middle East. Made famous in the first
Gulf War, the Apache D has been upgraded with more powerful engines, Fire Control Radar (FCR) target aquisition system, fire-and-
forget Hellfire missiles for air-to-ground combat and improved survivability, communications and navigational systems.
The AH-64D has been well designed to fit mechanics yet has enough space to add a completely detailed cockpit and interior.
While each modeler decides how much detail is added,
new modelers should be aware that between opening your new AH-64D Apache fuselage box and finishing the model to the
level shown in the photos can take between 6 to 18 months, depending on how much time you can commit to building
and finishing.
The MMS (mast mounted sight) that Len scratch built for the Kiowa and the Apache is an extreme example of how much scale detailing can be added. It is
not recommend for builders in the novice or intermediate levels. Like many scale models, static scale details are fairly easy to add to the surface of the
fiberglass, however once you choose to add details that now cover rotating components you have to be extra vigilant in the design and construction of the
components. If you are comfortable in designing, manufacturing and heat treating your own new hollow mainshaft then this might be an interesing challenge
for you. Keep in mind that we do not endorse or recommend engineering changes that can result in component failures.
An early experiement I tried many years
ago was to have longer solid main shaft manufactured for my UH-1N Huey. Here is the result: the
challenges of heat treating and why I now buy my main shafts. I was very lucky it failed close to the ground and the damage was repairable, it would have
been a very different situation at anything above 10 feet off the ground. |
