  > Len Mount Fuselages  >  1/6th Scale N-4 Dauphin  Printable Version

N-4 Dauphin
LM1012

The Dauphin is another large fuselage that will easily fit gasoline mechanics. The Dauphin fuselage has an incredible amount of detail on the fuselage and on the many included parts that detail the interior of the fuselage. This is the same fuselage kit that Len Mount brought to the 2002 Top Gun and placed 2nd.

The Dauphin helicopter was designed by Aerospatiale in France to replace their aging Alouette III helicopters for both civilan and military roles. The first prototype was flying in 1972 but by the time the Dauphin has reached production, a twin engine version was already flying. In the early 1980's the United States Coast Guard selected the Dauphin as their primary air-sea rescue helicopter for extreme weather conditions. To meet the US standards, American designers made navigation, guidance, engine and engineering changes to the Dauphin and it became designated as the HH-65.

The size of the Dauphin fuselage is designed for Vario's Fenestrom gasoline mechanics but it could be easily modified for any other gas mechanics. What is most impressive about this fuselage is the attention to detail that is included. All the formers in the main cabin are already installed, including the tricycle retractable landing gear with wheels. This by itself saves the modeler a tremendous amount of work. The modeler then can add all the scale detailing including a full cockpit, all of the maintenance hatches, engine compartment, scale exhaust and antenna to fully detail the model. New modelers should be aware that between opening your new N-4 Dauphin fuselage box and finishing the model can take between 3 to 12 months, depending on how much time you can commit to building and finishing.

Turbine not recommended:
We have received several questions as whether the Dauphin can be built with a turbine engine and mechanics. In our opinion it is not recommended. From a physical point of view the Jakadofsky turbine and Len Mount turbine mechanics could fit into the fuselage. The fiberglass exhaust tubes cannot be used to vent the exhaust from the model turbine. What is needed is to cut large 4" [10cm] holes in both sides of the fuselage and use a 'wye' style exhaust manifold. Have a look at the Kiowa fuselage and you will see what we are talking about. The other major issue is that the exhaust holes would need to be in the tail boom section just past the rear of the cabin, which would greatly reduce the strength in the tail boom and potentially cause a failure at this location.

Features:
•  High quality fiberglass components manufactured using Epoxy resin.
•  Pilot doors and main cabin doors can be openable with additional hinge hardware.
•  Complete set of vaccuum formed clear windows are included for all openings.
•  Detailed panel lines that describe the entire fuselage, section by section.
•  Precision cut formers are installed in the main cabin.
•  Scale aluminum retractable landing gear set with wheels is installed.
