Fenestron VOG
SCM Series

Cine-Scale Helicopters has redesigned the Fenestron tail unit to allow modelers to match the tail thrust to their models. Now that seems simple but until now, all the Fenestron tail units have been designed with a fixed amount of thrust or maximum tail blade pitch. Previously, the only way to increase the thrust was to spin the tail faster using a speed-up gear set. This has been proven to work, but costs more, fits very few mechanics and leads to premature wear.

The Fenestron tail unit was first test flown in 1968 on the second experimental model of the Aerospatiale SA 340. This later became the SA 341 Gazelle and was produced in a joint-venture between Westland Helicopters (UK) and Aerospatile (France) to be subsequently deployed in all divisions of the British and French Armed Forces from 1969 to 1984.

From a modeling stand point the tail is is more complicated to build, assemble and setup but, mainly due to the overall high cost and highly dedicated mechanics required, there are very few modelers actually flying them. The key complaints from modelers have been the soft tail control which makes flying the model on a windy day risky and potentially disasterous. Only through experimentation have we learned that the current Fenestron units require a much higher rotational speed to provide better control. Now most manufacturers have stepped up and offered a speed-up unit to solve this problem but in doing so has created new problems. Increasing the tail speed as an upgrade puts significantly greater load on the Fenestron unit and components wear out faster, over much shorter time periods. In many cases the standard tail drive is no longer capable of providing the higher speed an must also be upgraded to avoid premature wear and/or complete failure in flight. Cine-Scale has taken a completely new approach to solving this problem.

Cine-Scale has developed their Fenestron VOG tail unit to rotate at the current moderate speed of 9000~9500 which is mostly standard in scale helicopter mechanics. The key to their design is to optimize the thrust from the tail by matching the number of tail blades to a fuselage tail diameter, instead of changing the speed the tail assembly has to turn. This has several distinct advantages, no other upgrades or hopups are needed, it is skeletal to allow direct replacement from your current Fenetron unit and moveable components have a lower operating load for a longer service life. If you have been disappointed with the performance from your magestic model that has a Fenestron tail, the Cine-Scale Fenestron VOG unit will make you smile on your very first flight.
